The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has asked all security personnel in the state to check the excesses of their men, while assuring that the people of the state will continue to support them.
“You must know that the government and people of Borno state are behind you and your men, but you must call your soldiers to order, you must check their excesses”, the governor was heard on Monday telling the theatre commander of the war against Boko Haram in the state, General Olusegun Adeniyi at a checkpoint along Maiduguri-Damaturu highway where security personnel of the Nigeria military and police were alleged to be extorting N1000 from travelers who do not have national identity cards.
Governor Zulum exclaimed that “This is unacceptable! How can you subject people to this kind of torture all in the name of National ID card? And you are all here collecting N500 and N1000 from poor travelers who don’t have national ID card.”
The governor said he has received several reports about the alleged extortion at the Maiduguri checkpoint, and directed the security personnel at the gate to allow all travelers move.
