Court Orders Bride to Refund Dowry, Marital Items

A Shariah court sitting in Kano has ordered a 22-year old bride (name withheld) to return her bride price and wedding boxes to her former husband.

The  33 years old former husband (name withheld), while  giving his evidence in chief  in the case, revealed before  the court that he got married to the bride nine months ago.

According to him, few days after the solemnization of their holy matrimony, the bride absconded back to her parental home.

Police prosecutor, Usman Mohammed told the court that the parents of the bride resisted efforts made by relatives to compel the bride to relocate back to her husband.

The bride told the court that she cannot return to co-habit with the plaintiff claiming that she is suffering from an undisclosed health challenge.

In his judgement, the presiding judge, Ustaz  Jafar Abdulkareem, ordered the bride to refund the sum of N200, 000,00 to  her former husband, adding that the amount to be paid is the money that was exhausted during  the official conduct of their marriage engagement and ceremony, not personal gifts that may have been exchanged between the man and the woman.

He further ordered the bride to return to her former groom five boxes containing clothing and cosmetics that were given to her by the groom as part of the items that were used to formalize their marriage.
