Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal High Court in Abuja earlier today (Monday) sentenced Maryam Sanda to death by hanging after finding her guilty of killing her husband Bilyaminu Bello in 2017.
Justice Halilu said there was compelling evidence to convict the accused, dispelling Maryam’s claim that her husband died after falling on a broken Shisha pot during a fight with her. He described the Shisha evidence as a “smokescreen to deceive the court”, saying she intentionally stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife with intent to kill him.
The prosecution had told the court that Maryam stabbed her husband with a broken bottle, intending to kill him. But she had denied the claim, saying her husband died after he accidentally fell on a broken Shisha bottle in their home.
