Young members of the Kano branch of the Nigerian Bar Association  ( NBA) on Thursday went home with food items and some amount of money to help them cope with the effect of the stay at home order put in place by governments to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Chairman of the branch who was at the distribution centre at Guda Abdullahi Road, Farm Centre, Kano, told Judicial Sketch that the items and money came from contributions of members as well as a major intervention by a businessman in the state.
Chairman of the palliative committee, Ibrahim M. G. Sagagi also said the response from members was appreciable, adding that each beneficiary got a small bag of rice, a carton of spaghetti and N5000.
But a member of the branch told Judicial Sketch in confidence that members’ contributions were very meagre, saying the highest donor actually gave N200, 000 “and those who contributed were less than 30 as at today when the distribution started. It is possible that more contributions would still come, as I’m aware this is a continuing process.”
Most of the beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the leadership of the branch “for thinking of this initiative”, while commending the committee for “a good job.”
