Journalists under the aegis of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano state chapter have described as “unacceptable and babaric” the alleged assault metted by security operatives on one Uchenna Iyoke, a journalist attached to Dala fm in Kano.
The chairman of the state chapter of SWAN, Musbau Yan Gurasa, who confirmed that the affected journalist was brutalized by security agents along Burma Road in Sabon Gari, Kano, said when the victim was approached by the security agents, the reporter simply identified himself, but the operatives were adamant and unprofessional. “They flogged him with a whip.”
He said the incident occurred by 4.15pm on Tuesday.
According to him, the association will not tolerate the subjection of its members to inhuman treatment during the lockdown. He explained that practising journalists are exempted from observing the lockdown, adding that they are essential service providers.
Musbau urged security eggheads to call their operatives to order and caution their operatives to exercise restraint, while urging journalists to continue to comply with the laid down rules governing thier trade.
The victim, Iyoke, told Judicial Sketch that he suffered bruises and psychological trauma in the way he was malhandled by the operatives.
He said ” I am still in pains.”
