Jigawa State government has constituted a 5-man committee to investigate the cause(s) of the death of over a hundred people in Hadejia local government area of the state.
The state commissioner of health, who doubles as the chairman of the state COVID-19 Task force, Dr Abba Zakari, told the press that the government was worried about the incidence and has taken the step in order to have knowledge-based information about it.
Over a hundred people were reported on Monday to have died in Hadejia within the last ten days, as the special assistant to the chairman of the local council on media, Sani Kakabori told Channels Television that ten people or more have died daily, most of them above the ages of fifty, for ten straight days.
This revelation has spurred the state government to swiftly react by establishing the fact-finding committee that investigate the issue and recommend appropriate actions.
The state health commissioner said the committee is to be chaired by Dr Mahmud Abdulwahab, while Shehu Mohammad, Yusuf Hakimi, Shehu Sule, and a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) are members.
It is not clear if members of the committee are drawn from appropriate quarters and have requisite qualification and experience to carry out the job. The chairman obviously is a medical personnel and the WHO representative, if there is any, could be said to be properly selected.
The committee, according to the health commissioner, is expected to submit its reports by Thursday.
