Nigeria’s health minister, Dr Osagie Ehanire, on Monday said the federal government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) would conduct drug trial on imported Madagascan herbal mixture (Covid-Organic) which was said to be effective in curing COVID-19

He said the trial would be carried out in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, Sokoto and Kano states.

The minister disclosed this at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 press briefing in Abuja on Monday, saying Nigeria was expecting a consignment of the drug from Madagascar.

COVID-19 Presidential Task Force chairman, Boss Mustapha, also confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the airlifting of COVID Organic to Nigeria.

They however said the herbal drug would not be used in Nigeria until it has been scientifically certified by the agencies concerned to be safe and effective.

Mustapha said “It has been sent to Guinea Bissau by the President or Prime Minister of Madagascar and certain allocations have been made to different countries. We have an indication of the quantity that has been allocated to Nigeria and we are supposed to make an arrangement to freight it out of Guinea Bissau to Nigeria.

“I’ve received instructions from Mr President to make arrangements to freight it home, with a clear instruction that I should subject it to the validation process similar to what will happen to any other medicine or syrup or vaccine that is discovered or created internally. So, it will be subjected to the same process before it is put into any form of use. There’ll be no exception for that”, he said.
