An independent group, Inclusive Community Education and Development Association (ICEADA) has bemoaned the continued violation of the rights of elder persons in Nigeria.
The group in a statement issued to mark the 2020 day of the abused elderly people said the elderly people are suffering under the yoke of negligence, deprivation, discrimination and violent attacks.
The statement, signed by the leader of the group, Professor Muhammad Bello Shitu, alleged that elderly persons are the most devastated in Nigerian communities.
According to him, the failure to avail them with access to social amenities has further compunded the problems being suffered by the elderly, adding that they are vulnerable to fear and intimidation.
He insisted that government at all levels should proceed to ensure the protection of the rights of the elderly by providing them with improved pension scheme and access to social services.
Shittu narrated that the elderly group are the most devastated by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating the federal, state, local governments, alongside charity organisations should extend palliatives to the elderly, explaining that those in this group suffer from major ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke and rheumatism.
